How To Dress For a Black-Tie Event

Black-tie events are the most formal type, offering you the perfect opportunity to flaunt your fancy jewelry and high heels. These events require men to wear tuxedos and women to pull out their best Scala evening dresses or couture gowns.  Read on for additional tips for dressing “black tie.”

Flatter Your Figure

The first step for choosing black-tie attire is to select a dress that flatters your figure.  Take in to account the cut and style that will highlight your assets and hide any problem areas.

Go Long

You never want to be underdressed for a black-tie fundraiser. With few opportunities to dress up in designer gowns, go ahead and put on your finest floor-length dress. Sometimes it is okay to wear a cocktail dress, but if you are unsure, stick with a long, formal look.

Balance Your Ensemble

You can wear a dress with a nice (not plunging) neckline, a small slit in the leg, and jewelry, but be sure you balance it out tastefully.  If your dress has several cuts or designs, keep jewelry to a minimum.  Remember that black-tie affairs demand conservative attire. On the flip side, if your dress is simple, pair it with elegant jewelry to dress it up.

Consider Investment

If you plan to attend a few black-tie fundraisers or events in your lifetime, invest in good-quality, classic designer cocktail dresses or ball gowns. Select a style that will not get old with time and one that will allow you to change its look by adding different jewelry.

Stick With Basic

Black-tie fundraisers are typically more conservative and formal events. If in doubt about what to wear, go with the basic dress instead of the sequined dress. Play it safe and stick with subtle dresses made of elegant fabrics. A small clutch or handbag of the same color or fabric as your dress will give you a chic look.

Black or Color

Black-tie does not mean you must wear black, although it is a lovely choice. Opt for a dark, subtle color such as deep red or plum that best complements your complexion.

Evening Makeup

When applying makeup, go for either dramatic eyes or lips. Avoid both together as you will appear over-done. Pair smoky eyes with neutral-colored lips for a polished look.

Stand Up Tall

The right shoes are a crucial part of your attire. Choose heels that will be comfortable for an evening of mingling. Footwear such as dress or open-toed shoes look stylish paired with floor-length, cocktail, or evening gowns. Keep in mind that sandals can take the most fancy dress from fabulous to nearly casual in an instant.
