Pump Up the Spirit for the First Week of School

As the days grow shorter and the air gets cool and crisp, school begins again. The start of a new year is the time we see our friends old and new, and prepare for another year of learning and fun.

The hallways come to life with the mix of students, from the athletes to the scholars, to the squad in their cheerleading uniforms and football team in their jerseys. Everyone is excited for ways to pump up the spirit this school year, and here are some great ways to do so.

Talent Show: Have a talent show. This idea allows multiple students to showcase their talents such as singing or dancing and meet one another. Students also love when teachers are involved in the fun. This is a great way to kick off the start off a new school year and show your unique skills to your friends and classmates.

Introduce the Mascot: Many schools take a lot of pride in their mascot. Likely, your school has chosen an energetic individual who will promote enthusiasm, run around, and show off their tricks. Having the mascot in action at events will communicate excitement to the student body.

Lunch Hour Activities: If the principal and staff approve the idea, schedule entertaining activities to take place throughout lunch hours. Several types of contests would allow for unity and bonding among students while also pumping up school spirit. Some of these ideas include:

  • Find a long hallway and have scooter races to the finish line.
  • Organize a trivia game. Have students set up in a contestant row and answer questions.
  • Have well-known songs on an electronic music device. Play the songs and have a challenge to see which student can name the tune first.

Pep Assembly: This is a time when the band can play the school fight song and you can clap along while the enthusiastic pep squad’s cheerleading bows shine as they dance. Pep rallies give a chance for the students to wave hello to one another while showing support the school teams. While the squad wears their cheer clothing and the football team wears their jerseys, you can sport your new fall wardrobe.

Deck the Halls: This doesn’t just happen around the Christmas season. Create posters or banners in the school’s official team colors and hang them around the school hallways. Make it a tradition each year during the first week of school and before all major sporting events.

Dress-Up Days: Designate days with themes and encourage the student body to dress up in creative (but appropriate) outfits. Create a point system and make it a competition among classes. Give prizes to the best-dressed students and have them show their outfit off during lunchtime fashion shows. Some fun themes include pajama day, superhero day, or patriotic day.

Fun Ways to Celebrate the Season’s First Football Game

School has just commenced, fall is in the air and the first big football game against the rival team is right around the corner.

Football games are a highlight for the entire town and hundreds will be cheering from the stands. Celebrate the season’s first football game these enjoyable ways.

Theme Night: Pick a theme and spread the word among the student body. Experience the joy of creating an original outfit while bonding with your friends. Dressing up shows unity and support for your school and the football team. Some fun ideas include a toga-inspired night or donning 80s-themed attire.

Make Posters:  Purchase poster board to decorate. Make them festive with glitter and bright colors. Write motivational sayings to support and cheer on your football team. Show your awesome sportsmanship by not putting down the opposing team.

Paint Your Faces: Buy face paint or even make your own. This is a simple and fun way to show your school spirit for the season’s first game. An added bonus is that face paint is very affordable and takes very little time to apply.

Make T-shirts: Cheer apparel makes the cheerleaders look festive, so what about everyone else? Making t-shirts is a practical and innovative idea to show your support for the football team. Think of a clever saying and choose a t-shirt in the color of your mascot. You could even add your last name or that of your favorite player to the back of the shirt.

Spirit Items: Often times, cheerleading bags are full of items such as candy to throw or mega phones to help boost team spirit. Another idea for the big first game is to bring your own bells or other noisemakers to shake when your team scores a goal. Foam hands personalized with your team logo are perfect for sports events as well.

Pep Rally:  Encourage the students to gather in the gym prior to the football game. This shows support for the members of the football team and promotes school spirit. Pep rallies allow the cheerleaders to shake their pom poms and dance to the band’s upbeat music. The entire student body can join in the celebration. This is an excellent way to initiate excitement among the students and faculty before the season’s kickoff.

Decorate:  Take a few minutes to color the windows of your car or the school. Writing fun sayings encourages excitement and fun.  You could also use sidewalk chalk to write on the sidewalks and school parking lot leading up to the football field.

The Science of Habits (and How to Break Them!)

Think back and recall something it took you some time to learn. At first, this task may have been difficult and you had to concentrate mentally on performing it properly.

But after your comfort levels grew, it became much simpler. Activities such as gambling, smoking, or brushing your teeth are habit-forming routines that all follow similar patterns. The science behind why we do what we do is quite interesting.

Habits and behaviors initially begin with a three-part psychological pattern. The first trigger sends the brain into “automatic mode” and the behavior unfurls. The behavior itself is the routine. It is what our minds think when we recall the habits. The third and final step is the reward.  The activity is something your brain enjoys and it remembers in the future to repeat the activity to receive the reward again.

If you know something is not good for you, why can’t you just stop? Many people would like to quit chewing tobacco. Using smokeless tobacco alternatives like non-tobacco dip could be a good substitute when trying to break the habit. The trick here is that the habit has been modified, not nixed.

Habits, once developed, are very hard to kick. Habits tend to arise through repetition of the activity. They are a normal part of life and may be helpful. Rising from bed, showering, combing our hair, and brushing our teeth are performed without mental awareness. Automatic behaviors are beneficial, as the brain does not have to consciously think to act out the activity.

Habits may also develop potentially harmful routines. Enjoyable activities may cue or trigger the brain’s pleasure center after performing a certain activity. Harmful routines, such as smoking, gambling, overeating, or even addiction to electronics may become habitual and tough to break.

Habits one greatly likes are much more difficult to break due to the dopamine (an important neurotransmitter that controls the brain’s pleasure and reward centers) released by the brain. If you do something pleasurable a number of times, dopamine strengthens the habit. The craving to continue doing these pleasurable activities then develops, as your brain is aware that it will be rewarded. Our brains are, in a sense, not working in our favor in this context as we try to cut ties with these negative habits.

A positive way to end the battle with bad habits is to actively replace the unhealthy routines with new ones. People find that they can replace habits with other behaviors. Exercise is a great habit to use as a replacement therapy. While this does not work for everyone, these alternative behaviors can help people stay away from undesirable habits. Bad habits are difficult to change, because it requires you to actively rewire that part of the brain. Habits are largely “auto pilot” type activities, and breaking habits requires you to be fully aware of yourself. Ask for support from your friends, colleagues, and family. With time, patience, and self-awareness, that bad habit of yours will be gone.

How to Become a Successful Personal Trainer

If you are wondering how to become a personal trainer, you have many options available to you. A number of universities offer degrees; many even conveniently have online courses available. Make sure you choose a reputable college to best prepare you for this new and exciting career path.

For added professional benefits, look into other types of certifications to supplement and further extend your practice. A nutrition consultant certification makes you a well-rounded, comprehensive lifestyle trainer and broadens your knowledge of the health field. A group fitness certification would also relate to your career as a personal trainer and make you more marketable. Ask your guidance counselor for further assistance.

The key to a successful personal training career involves more than you may think. Establishing loyal clientele is one component of a successful business. In addition, being professional, keeping clients satisfied, and building strong relationships will help you succeed as a personal trainer.

Professionalism: Make sure everything about you shows that you are a professional. Wear clean, professional-looking athletic wear. Make sure you’re always early. Keeping your clients waiting reflects poorly and ensures bad reviews and unhappy clients. Last but not least, keep and remember accurate profiles on each client. You, of all people, know that one-size-fits-all health regimens don’t exist. Put effort into helping each client attain their specific goals, for their body and and special circumstances.

Provide Individualized Workouts: Each client is unique in their wishes and goals. Just as they do not fit one mold, neither should your programs and solutions. Find out about each client’s situation and make your response tailored to their needs. Do not be afraid to ask questions.

Go Slowly: Remember, this is your area of expertise, not your clients’. That is why they have sought out your professional guidance. Make the steps of their workout plan manageable. Ensure their understanding of how to properly use equipment to maximize results.

Positive Reinforcement: Your clients need encouragement and inspiration to show up for their next session with you. Let your client know their improvements from the last meeting, for instance. Give him or her compliments or send an occasional email telling your client that you are proud of them.

Keep in Touch with Past Clients: Great business practice involves keeping in touch with past clients. Make a point to shoot a letter or email to touch base with clients who have moved on, just to ensure they have stayed on track. Sometimes they may come back to you. If not, they are likely to share your name with other friends and colleagues in the market for a great personal trainer like you.

Classic Musicians Worth a Listen

The piano is a popular instrument because of its versatility and simplicity to learn. The piano is fun to play whether you’re tinkering with an electronic keyboard or restored Steinway pianos

Used Steinway pianos for sale are a great buy, if your love for classical music is urging you to play. So dust off your Steinway model O piano and start practicing. For inspiration, check out these three classic musicians:

Johann Sebastian Bach: Many would argue this talented composer has created the greatest music known on Earth. Bach did not invent new styles of music; instead, he perfected each one that existed at the time.  Bach was the writer of the greatest single masterpiece in history in any genre of music.

Bach was comfortable with complexity; composing music was nearly second nature to him. He attempted to write music that no other composer dared touch and did so with ease. The music of Bach is romantic and numerous films are set to his masterpieces. Artistically attractive and intellectually deep, much of his music is considered nearly perfect.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: This musical genius is the most famous in history and one of the finest pianists and violinists ever known. He has perfected classical music of pristine lyrical quality. Other well-known composers aspired to his musical gift as he created one masterpiece after another with exceptional clarity. Mozart’s first drafts were the only draft he needed to create.

Mozart wrote many pieces of classical music, including an impressive 41 symphonies, 27 piano concerts, and 23 operas along with many others. His most popular and best piece of work in all respects is his opera Don Giovanni.  All of his work is considered legendary.

Ludwig van Beethoven: The inventor of romantic music, Beethoven began his amazing career by imitating the style of other famed composers. Due to the production of films, romantic music was still required and many composers’ modern styles were not appropriate for drama. He composed several amazing works of romantic music throughout his lifetime.

Beethoven’s works are glorious and historically unique in their type of music. One of his finest pieces of work, the 5th Symphony, has the single most famous melody in musical history and is hummed by people every day. Beethoven had true talent, as he accomplished this extreme success while being completely deaf for the last 25 years of his life.

3 Ideas for Beautiful Wedding Tables

With the biggest celebration of your life just around the corner, there is a lot of planning taking place. On your big day, you want to make a statement and have an unforgettable celebration.

Countless hours have been spent seeking the perfect dress, the best hairstyle, a photographer to capture every moment, and a DJ to ensure the guests will be dancing the evening away.

Likely, you decided on a reception hall that features luxury dining room furniture. After all, the big day is just once in your lifetime. You want your tables to look classic and lovely. Adding decorative centerpieces will complete the look for an amazing reception.

Wedding tables courtesy of custom furniture makers are the component of the reception that sets the mood for the event the moment guests walk through  the door. Here are some ideas for beautiful and unforgettable wedding tables.

Light Up the Room

Candles, crystals, or some sparkle make the greatest centerpieces, as they will catch your guests’ eye. This holds true especially for receptions taking place indoors during the evening, where the glimmering centerpieces make the wedding reception feel more cheerful. A day or outdoor reception also call for light and shiny centerpieces. They are eye-catching and highlight the beautiful centerpiece you have chosen. One could chose floating candles or votives, Christmas lights, glass beads or shimmery ribbon. Simply keep in mind that the key is light.

Please the Eyes with Variety

When designing or picking your centerpiece, attempt to incorporate some variety. A collaboration of various heights, widths, and colors is much more striking than using the same size candles in just one shade of blue or green. Centerpieces with variety are more visually interesting when centered on the luxury furniture in the reception hall and make a bigger impact.

Personalize the Centerpiece

It is not hard to spend into the triple digits on the centerpiece for your reception, only to find it looks exactly like nearly every reception your guests have attended. This event is a celebration of the bride and groom and the joy of sharing your lives with one another. Try to incorporate a centerpiece that incorporates this and that is not completely forgettable. By adding framed photographs or something that signifies stories of your lives, you create talking points for your guests. This could even introduce friends or family to a part of your lives they did not know about you. Not only is this a cost-effective way to create beautiful tables; it also makes a memorable and lovely centerpiece.

How to Dress Like a Celebrity

Watching the television, movies and award ceremonies are fun with the exception of one thing.  The entire time, you are yearning to look as glamorous as the celebrities donning their Jovani dresses on the red carpet.   If you are hoping to pull off the same look as the stars, keep reading.

The following tips are easy ways to help make you look and feel sophisticated, just like the stars.

Sunglasses
Purchase a fancy pair of sunglasses for yourself. Do not be afraid to go fancy with studs or diamonds. Aviators are also a popular choice. Wear sunglasses wherever you go, from the supermarket to the post office. Protect your eyes and skin by choosing a pair that provides UVA and UBV protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

Add Big Accessories
Big is the keyword not to forget. Wear big accessories, from bangle bracelets to earrings or headbands. Hoop earrings work for anyone and so do large handbags. Pair an oversized handbag, jacket, jeans, and big sunglasses and you will have the daytime look of the most popular stars.

Choose Fashionable Items
Encourage yourself to wear outfits that are stylish like skinny jeans with large shirts and huge purses. For special occasions, chose designer dresses in colors such as white or jewel tones. Black is always a classy color choice for designer evening dresses whether you are headed to a wedding or a nice evening on the town. Strapless or spaghetti-strap dresses or gowns are the best-loved styles worn by the hottest celebrities.

Is Less Actually More?
If you are contemplating purchasing the lacy or sequined shirt, but your budget would prefer the plain one, stick with the basics. Not only will the plain shirt allow for mixing and matching within your wardrobe, it can also be dressed up with a longer necklace for a glitzy look. Many celebrities are seen shopping or dining in plain shirts and add a scarf or hat to accessorize. A leather jacket can complete the ensemble.

Scarves
Adding a scarf to your outfit immediately makes you look more like a celebrity. The stars are constantly seen with a scarf around their neck or tied at their waist. This accessory is great because it can alter the look of nearly any outfit and you can find a variety of colors and styles at affordable prices.

Mix Things Up

Don’t allow yourself to get stuck in a fashion rut. Choose items that are daring and different. If you want to wear leggings instead of skinny jeans, experiment with this option. To look your best, always stay confident and true to yourself.

Buying a housewarming gift can be challenging. You want to pick a present that will be used by the person, but that they do not already own. Personal taste comes into play when choosing decorations, so finding the right gift may be tricky. Don’t show up to the housewarming party empty-handed. You may chose to include additional items like light bulbs, a tape measure, and even a book on home repair. Many people will not initially purchase these items and will be thankful to have them on hand.

Decorations
Wall art and home decor can be a challenge to select for another person. Print off photographs and make a collage for a wall or put them in a nice photo frame they can hang or place on a coffee table.  More unique photo gifts include mounted prints or canvas wall art. These are simple yet creative and make elegant alternatives to traditional framing. Your friend will enjoy making their new house feel more like home with these personalized decorations. If you want to make the gift even more personal, throw in a photo charm bracelet.

Neighborhood or City Information
If the housewarming present is for someone new to the city or neighborhood, help him or her learn more about the area.  Give local maps or make a calendar marked with days that specific events occur unique to that area. Purchase a few gift certificates to restaurants and attractions to help them feel at home and become better acquainted with the city or neighborhood.

Kitchen Collection
For a first-time homeowner or a person moving for the fourth time, this is a great present. In a reusable container, such as a cookie tin, place items such as a can opener, spatula, oven mitts, salt and pepper set or an oversized spoon. The aim of this is to give practical items that will be useful. Go ahead and throw in some dishtowels or even sugar or flour to complete the kitchen collection.

Outdoor Set
If the recipient has a yard, they are in need of several additional items. Things such as a BBQ tool set will come in handy.  You could also give gifts like a garden hose, sprinkler, outdoor gloves and even weed killer. A book on gardening would also be beneficial. Unless they have mentioned a specific item, you may avoid picking out flowers or patio furniture and let the homeowner select what they prefer.
